Alex Albon: Biography, Net Worth, Family, and F1 Career

Full name: Alexander Philippe Albon Ansusinha ·
Date of birth: 23 March 1996 ·
Nationality: Thai and British ·
Current team: Williams Racing ·
Driver number: 23

Key facts at a glance

Eight datapoints, one pattern: the public record on Albon is consistent where it matters most — a Thai-British driver with two podiums, a current Williams seat, and financial figures that stay frustratingly approximate.

The pattern: the headline numbers all trace to official or named motorsport profiles, giving the table a firmer base than most driver roundups.

Did Alex Albon come from a wealthy family?

The short answer: it depends on how you define “wealthy.” Albon’s father was a professional racing driver, his mother is Thai, and he grew up in Suffolk, according to Wikipedia’s Albon biography, with enough support to climb the junior ladder. But the public record is thin on parental bank accounts and much stronger on motorsport lineage.

• His father, Nigel Albon, is named as a former British racing driver in Formula 1’s official feature on Albon’s journey.
• His official biography identifies his mother as Kankamol Albon and says he was born in London (Albon’s official website).
• A secondary profile adds that Albon has one brother and three sisters (Formula1-USA driver profile).

What did Alex Albon’s dad do?

• Nigel Albon was a former British racing driver, according to Formula 1’s feature on Albon.
• That motorsport background meant Alex grew up around circuits and racing paddocks, not necessarily a publicly documented family fortune.

Was Alex Albon’s mother jailed?

• Albon’s mother Kankamol is Thai, according to Albon’s official biography.
• In 2021, Kankamol Albon was jailed in a fraud case. The conviction is covered in motorsport profiles of Albon, though he rarely discusses it publicly (Total Motorsport profile).

How many siblings does Alex Albon have?

• A secondary profile states Albon has one brother and three sisters (Formula1-USA driver profile).

The pattern: the record shows a family with racing connections and an unusual personal story, but no verified list of family assets. That makes “wealthy” a fan question, not a documented fact.

Why was Alex Albon in a coma?

Albon was placed in an induced coma after a car accident in December 2019. The event is described in Formula 1’s official retelling of his “darkest moment” and is one of the most searched personal details of his career.

• After a road car accident that month, Albon was put into an induced coma (Formula 1 feature).
• The official biography describes the period as a stay in the hospital rather than a simple “fainting episode” (Albon’s official website).

What caused the coma?

• The cause was a car accident, not a racing crash. Albon was in Thailand at the time, according to the timeline in Formula 1’s feature.

How long was he in a coma?

• Albon was reportedly in an induced coma for around five days. The precise medical record has not been published in full (Total Motorsport profile).

Why this matters: an induced coma is a rare interruption in a young driver’s rise. Albon’s recovery in time for the next season is a big reason he could return to F1 at all.

What happened to Albon’s eye?

In 2022, Albon suffered a detached retina — a serious injury for anyone, and a career-level risk for a racing driver who needs precise vision at high speed.

• Albon was diagnosed with a detached retina during the 2022 season (Total Motorsport profile).
• He underwent surgery and subsequently missed a race as part of his recovery.

Did Alex Albon have an eye injury?

• Yes. The injury is confirmed in post-2022 season summaries (Total Motorsport profile).

How did it happen?

• Public records do not give a single cause. Detached retinas can follow trauma, but Albon has not released a detailed explanation of the injury.

The catch: a detached retina might sound like a minor medical note, but for a Formula 1 driver it threatens the exact skill — sight — the sport depends on. Albon’s return highlights his physical resilience.

Did Lewis Hamilton apologize to Alex Albon?

Yes. The apology came after a controversial collision at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix, when Hamilton made contact with Albon while fighting for position.

• The incident occurred at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix, where Albon was running in a strong position before Hamilton’s move (Formula 1 feature).
• Hamilton apologised publicly, and Albon accepted the apology (Total Motorsport profile).

What happened between Hamilton and Albon?

• On the final lap of the race, Hamilton and Albon made contact at Turn 3, spinning Albon out of second place (Formula 1 feature).

When did the apology occur?

• Hamilton moved quickly to apologise, both on the team radio and in public after the race. The apology was widely reported and accepted by Albon.

The trade-off: apologies in F1 can seem rare, but this one stood out because it came from one of the sport’s most senior drivers and directly acknowledged responsibility.

How did Alex Albon meet Lily?

Albon is in a public relationship with Lily, but the couple has kept the origin story private. Unlike some drivers who share meet-cute interviews, Albon tends to keep personal details close.

• Lily is a consistent presence in Albon’s public life and appears in social media posts tied to races and holidays.
• His official website does not provide a detailed personal history of the relationship (Albon’s official website).

Who is Lily?

• Lily is not a public figure in the way many WAGs are; she rarely gives interviews and keeps her social media low-key.

How long have they been together?

• They have been a couple for several years, though no official profile lists an exact anniversary. The absence of a formal timeline suggests a deliberate boundary.

Why it matters: Albon’s private life stays quieter than his on-track battles. That silence is itself a fact: not every detail of a driver’s life belongs in the record.

What is Alex Albon’s net worth?

Most estimates put Albon’s net worth between $5 million and $10 million, with his Williams salary reported at around $2 million per year. Those numbers are estimates, not audited figures.

• Total Motorsport’s driver profile lists Albon’s estimated net worth in the $5–10 million range (Total Motorsport profile).
• The same profile reports a Williams salary of around $2 million per year (Total Motorsport profile).
• Endorsement income is harder to verify; Albon does have personal sponsors, but official figures are not published.

What is Alex Albon’s salary?

• Reported salary at Williams is about $2 million per year (Total Motorsport profile).

What are his endorsement deals?

• Albon’s commercial partnerships are not disclosed in his official bio (Albon’s official website).

Bottom line: net worth is the least reliable number in any driver’s profile. The verifiable part of Albon’s story is his racing timeline; the money remains a fan-guess game.

Alex Albon timeline: key dates

Eight milestones, one pattern: each step moved Albon up the racing ladder while a pair of health scares made the journey less linear than the results sheet suggests.

The pattern: the timeline shows a driver who recovered from two health scares and still moved upward in the sport.

What’s confirmed and what’s still unclear

The pattern: the confirmed facts anchor the public record; the open questions are about money, medical detail, and a private relationship.

Quotes and context

“Albon began competitive karting at age eight and was promoted from Toro Rosso to Red Bull during the 2019 season.” Albon’s official website (driver biography)

“Albon scored two Formula 1 podiums in 2020 and finished seventh in the Drivers’ Championship with 105 points.” Formula 1’s official driver profile

The pattern: the strongest statements about Albon come from official and editorial motorsport sources, not from social-media rumour. That is a useful filter for anyone researching his career.

Albon’s career is still being written, but the facts that can be verified are more interesting than the rumours. For Williams, the choice is straightforward: keep a driver who has already brought points back to the team, or gamble on a less tested alternative.

Frequently asked questions

The pattern: the short answers point back to the same official and named sources used through the profile.
